Dysthymia – Dysthymic Disorder
Mood Disorder Symptoms Psychotherapy
- Decreased appetite or overeating
- Insomnia or hypersomnia
- Low energy or fatigue
- Low self-esteem
- Poor concentration or difficulty making decisions
- Feelings of hopelessness
A condition is characterized as dysthymic when it has the above symptoms. However, there is no doubt that there is a depressive substratum which is active and brings to the surface all those elements associated with the development of guilt, low self-esteem, concern for other people, punishment and reparation. Let’s take one of these items. The low self-esteem. Low self-esteem is a typical symptom of a depressive reaction. There the self which has not been able to establish within itself a stable sense of value suffers with self-punishment and self-blame. For what reasons does this happen? It happens because there is anger built up. And where does anger come from? Anger, which turns into hatred and rage depending on the intensity and insult felt by the self, comes from the feeling that the figure who takes care of the baby, for some reason, is not able to reflect its needs. There lies the great mystery of life that the self feels within itself. The cares of the mother figure are valuable, and if the bond that develops between the baby and its mother is mutually entertaining, then fears are reduced and minute by minute the physical impression of pleasure, that is, value, is created. Of self-esteem. So self-esteem is based on the ability to enjoy what is happening in the relationship. There is no stronger factor, which so generously offers the feeling of pleasant mood, than reciprocity. It’s that “me and you together have a good time”, we can look at each other, make eye contact, communicate. There, value is generously given to the self without any doubt, without any reflection.
